AG Dana Nessel Refuses To Seek Answers on Nursing Home Deaths; Chooses To Protect Crony Gretchen Whitmer Instead

Attorney General Dana Nessel failed to stand up for Michiganders who have serious questions regarding Gov. Whitmer’s nursing home orders

LANSING, MICH—Attorney General Dana Nessel is putting cronyism ahead of leadership by refusing to launch an investigation into the decision-making process, and subsequent impact, of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s nursing home orders.

Eight state senators in Michigan, led by State Sen. Jim Runestad (R-White Lake), asked Nessel to launch an investigation into whether the governor’s policies may have exacerbated deaths from COVID-19 in nursing homes. They are also seeking answers as to the accuracy of statewide data related to nursing home deaths.

“Just like New York, Michigan was one of five states whose executive orders forced nursing homes to take COVID-19-positive patients into the same facilities as our most vulnerable seniors,” said Runestad. “Grieving families deserve to know why this happened, how it was allowed to happen, and why the administration refuses to release nursing home COVID-19 data.”

“In New York, the Democratic attorney general did the right thing and launched an investigation into the Democratic administration’s nursing home policies. She put people over politics,” Runestad added. “Apparently that’s too much to ask of our attorney general.”

In their request, the senators questioned the accuracy of nursing home data, and inquired if the policies complied with CDC guidelines.

“Attorney General Dana Nessel is covering for her political crony, Governor Gretchen Whitmer,” said Ted Goodman, Communications Director for the Michigan Republican Party. “Michiganders deserve a full investigation into the impact of the nursing home orders issued by the Governor, and if related data is inaccurate.”
