FACT CHECK: MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS PUT SPECIAL INTERESTS AHEAD OF PARENTS AND STUDENTS

  • Michigan Democrats were shamed into deleting a Facebook post where they argued that parents should not be playing a role in their children’s education.
  • Whitmer is an adamant opponent of school-choice.
    • In March 2017, Whitmer said one of her first priorities as Governor would be to “put some accountability into charter schools.”
    • Whitmer campaigned on adding burdensome regulations on charter schools such as forbidding charter schools to contract with for-profit management companies – a policy blasted by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies  as “playing politics” with our children.
    • Whitmer threatened to “financially punish” government local government that do not close poor-performing charter schools.
    • In 2019, Whitmer line-item vetoed a $35 million funding increase for charter schools that was being granted to non-charter public schools.
    • In 2019, Whitmer vetoed funding for a $2,400 tuition grant program which provided $2,400 in scholarships for students to attend one of about 30 private colleges in the state.
    • The Michigan chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MIIAP) called for schools to reopen for in-person instruction warning that the achievement gap for poor students would only worsen.
  • Whitmer wanted to knock doors for Terry McAuliffe for Virginia Governor before being shamed into backing out.
