Gretchen Whitmer Is Under Water In Her Promise To Revive Michigan’s Manufacturing Sector As The State’s Economy Grinds To A Halt

Kellogg’s Is Breaking Up And Moving To Chicago Months After Gretchen Whitmer Did Nothing
- On Tuesday, Kellogg’s announced that it is breaking up into three companies and the corporate headquarters will be moving from Battle Creek to Chicago.
- Kellogg’s has been in Michigan for 115 years.
- Last year, Bernie Sanders traveled to Battle Creek to support strikers seeking higher wages.
- Whitmer did not even weigh in on the strike and took no apparent action to resolve the dispute other than sending hand-warmers to the picketers.
- In contrast, Governor Pete Ricketts (R-NE) sent a letter to Kellogg publicly pressuring them to return to the bargaining table.
- The breakup of Kellogg’s in Battle Creek is a disaster for local workers, with the majority of the hourly employees at Kellogg’s making $120,000 per year, according to the company.
Michigan Has Lost Jobs For Two Consecutive Months
- For two months in a row, Michigan has lost jobs.
- Michigan lost 14,600 jobs in May.
- Michigan lost 2,300 manufacturing jobs in May alone and also lost jobs in the construction, retail, hospitality and auto manufacturing sectors.
- Michigan lost manufacturing jobs in 4 out of the 5 months reported in 2022.
- There are 128,300 fewer jobs in Michigan compared to when Whitmer took office in January 2019.
- Michigan’s unemployment rate is the 8th worst in the country and is now tied with far-left California.
- Michigan currently ranks in the bottom half of the country for GDP growth.
- The U.S. Commerce Department reported in their most recent data that Michigan ranks 49th in the nation for personal income growth.
- The Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency reported that the average Michiganders’ effective income fell by 4.4 percent as income is not keeping up with inflation.
- According to the National Association of Manufacturers, manufacturing in Michigan flatlined right when Whitmer took over as governor in 2019.
Whitmer Failed To Attract The Semiconductor Industry To Michigan – Instead She Focused On Fundraising For Her Campaign
- In 2021, Whitmer skipped out on a presidential visit from Joe Biden when Biden went to Detroit to promote electric vehicle production.
- Whitmer’s excuse for not attending the event with Biden was that she was meeting with semiconductor industry leaders trying to draw some of their business into Michigan.
- However, according to Michigan Campaign Finance records, Whitmer used that time in California to fundraise for her reelection.
- In 2022, Whitmer traveled to Washington to see Joe Biden to get his help to bring semiconductor manufacturing to Michigan but lost out to Governor Mike DeWine (R-OH) who created a more business friendly environment.
- Whitmer asked Biden for help securing semiconductor manufacturing in Michigan
- This comes after Governor Mike DeWine secured a $20 billion deal with Intel to build semiconductor manufacturing plants in the Columbus area.
- Ohio offered Intel pro-business incentives to come to Ohio.
Whitmer Failed To Attract The Electric Vehicle Industry To Michigan
- In April, Stellantis announced that they would be opening up a second electric vehicle battery plant and chose Kokomo, Indiana over two locations in Michigan.
- Detroit News: “The investment would mean Michigan has failed to win any battery plants from the transatlantic automaker’s first round of gigafactory investments.”
- Both Monroe County and Wayne County put in a bid for the factory.
- Stellantis chose Indiana because they provided favorable business incentives.
- Whitmer is sitting on $500 million in cash grants which Republicans in the legislature set aside to “help seal economic development deals”
- Earlier this year, Stellantis and LG announced a $4.1 billion investment in Ontario building electric vehicle batteries in Windsor, just across the river from Detroit creating 2,500 Canadian jobs.
- Whitmer secured a smaller $1.7 billion deal with LG which will create a much smaller 1,200 jobs in Holland.

- In 2021, Whitmer failed to place a bid on a Ford Motor Company electric vehicle expansion.
