Whitmer Wednesday: The Forgotten Auto Workers Left Out Of Whitmer’s Green New Deal Economy

September 21 2022

Auto Parts Manufacturing Is Crumbling In Michigan

“Gretchen Whitmer is single handedly responsible for thousands of automotive and manufacturing jobs lost in the state of Michigan, with even more job cuts on the horizon as she flaunts her green climate agenda while neglecting blue collar workers,” said Gustavo Portela, MIGOP Deputy Chief of Staff and Communications Director. “Whitmer’s green crusade is leaving the working class in the dust as she pursues an electric future with total disregard for the jobs it will cost. It’s clear with Gretchen Whitmer in charge, Michigan’s economy and workers lose out every time. That is why voters will choose to usher in change and a new era of economic opportunity by voting for Tudor Dixon in November.”

WHITMER INTENDS TO “RIGHT ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICES” BY NEUTRALIZING CARBON EMISSIONS IN PART BY CLOSING DOWN THE AUTO INDUSTRY’S GAS-POWERED CARS

  • Gretchen Whitmer does not have a plan to replace the thousands of workers losing their jobs as Michigan transitions to a Green New Deal auto economy that will result in fewer workers and less equity in Michigan’s economy.
  • In April, Whitmer released her climate agenda which called for neutralizing carbon emissions by 2050.
  • Whitmer’s plan “strongly emphasizes environmental justice” and to “right environmental injustices.”
  • Whitmer’s plan calls for transitioning 2 million Michiganders from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles.

NOW, AUTO PARTS MANUFACTURERS ARE SCRAMBLING TO FIND WORK

  • There are 8,200 fewer motor vehicle parts manufacturing workers at work today compared to when Whitmer took office.
  • In August, Ford announced that they are planning to lay off 3,000 employees as it shifts towards electric vehicles.
    • Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley said that the workforce in Michigan is not properly trained to work on electric vehicles.
    • Reuters: “Ford has a workforce largely hired to support a traditional combustion technology product lineup.”
  • MarketWatch: “The reason for the job risk and recent cuts is clear: Electric vehicles have far fewer moving parts in their drive trains than gas-powered vehicles.”
  • Brett Smith, director of technology at the Center for Automotive Research: “Here’s a pretty strong chance that there will be fewer people building these cars, fewer people building the parts to these cars, and that will create challenges in some automotive communities.”
  • The Economic Policy Institute estimated that shifting to electric vehicles could cost up to 75,000 workers their job nationwide.
  • In July, Stellantis announced that they are decommissioning their engine line in Trenton.
